Smilodon Populator Study

Description

Well, its a Smilodon Populator, a kick ass prehistoric cat who was the apex predator of its time. This is a simple little study i've done by trying to accurately get the anatomy of the smilodon to come to life on the page.

Quick Facts:
Length 8-10ft.
Weight 750-800lbs

Smilodon Populator was the largest of the sabretooth cats and was a powerhouse rather than a speed demon like some big cats today. Populator was similar to a bear with its muscular build and stood nearly 3.5-4 ft tall at its shoulders. This beast was adapted for grappling with big prey and used its large upperbody to wrestle them down and dish out the fatal bite from its huge 7-9in fangs. Smilodon did not bite with its teeth because they could break out, so it only bit to kill after it pinned its prey down. It should also be mentioned that Smilodon had a weak bite roughly only 40% as strong as a modern lion. However, Smilodon had such immense power in its body it didn't need strong jaws, just precision. Those huge fangs acted as slicing knives that would quickly kill its prey once bitten, rather than the time consuming neck bite/suffocation approach we see in modern big cats. The only other creature of the time period that could've even compared or killed a Smilodon was an Arctodus(short face bear). There is no cat alive today that could equal the raw power and aggression of the extinct Smilodon Populator, perhaps the biggest cat to ever live.

There tail would have most likely not been bobbed. The last 3/4s or so of a cats tail consists of a substance similar to cartilage only slightly harder. That is why a cats tail is so flexible. It's likely that their tails would have been about the same length as a tigers. This is an absolutely beautiful drawing. truly amazing.
